PENTECOSTE 4 BY WILLIAM CONGDON AT THE CHURCH OF SAN RAFFAELE ARCANGELO IN MILAN
TOWARDS PENTECOST WITH WILLIAM CONGDON
On Tuesday April 3rd, at the church of San Raffele Arcangelo in Milan, the painting “Tentazione di Gesù”, exhibited throughout the time of Lent, was replaced by “Pentecost 4”, 1962 which will remain on display until the 20th of May.
The chromaticism dominated by dark and metallic colors of the Temptation of Jesus is replaced by the warm and fiery polychromy of “Pentecoste 4”, all the more explosive as it stands out against a very dark background with an almost glass-like splendor. As always, the artist is faithful to the scriptural text (in this case, Acts 2, 2-4): «Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them».
